The great set-piece battles of the World War One - Gallipoli, the Somme and Messines/Passchendaele - are explored in this series which combines unique archive footage with carefully researched location photography, transporting the viewer back to the exact spot where so many momentous events occurred.
[edit] Ch1. Gallipoli
The Gallipoli campaign was the land-based part of a strategy intended to allow Allied ships to pass through the Dardanelles, capture Constantinople, and ultimately knock Ottoman Turkey out of the war.
[edit] Ch2. Anzac Cove
The landing at Anzac Cove in April 1915 was part of the amphibious invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula by the forces of the British Empire and began the land phase of the of the First World War.
[edit] Ch3. The Somme
The Battle of the Somme began in July 1916. More than three million men fought in the battle and one million men were wounded or killed, making it one of the deadliest battles in human history.
[edit] Ch4. Bapaume
In 1916, Bapaume was one of the cities considered to be strategic objectives by the allies in the framework of the Battle of the Somme and its capture was a turning point of the First World War.
[edit] Ch5. Passchendaele
In 1917, the allies launched a huge offensive in the area around Ypres in the Belgian province of Flanders, the battle of Passchendaele was not as bloody as others but would achieve its own notoriety.
[edit] Ch6. Flanders
On July 31, 1917, the Allies launch a renewed assault on German lines in the Flanders region of Belgium, in the much-contested region near Ypres, beginning over three months of brutal fighting.
