[edit] Information
Volcano Live Ever wanted to know more about volcanoes or see one erupting? Well the BBC is finding out all about them in a series of special programmes from Hawaii. The show will feature volcanoes erupting and will look at some of the most famous volcanic eruptions in history. Hawaii is made up of a string of islands formed by molten rock called magma erupting from the seabed and creating volcanoes. Professor Iain Stewart and Kate Humble will present Volcano Live from Kilauea on Hawaii, the world's most active volcano
[edit] Our Active World
Kate Humble and geologist Iain Stewart explore the science of vulcanology and how Kilauea on Hawaii's Big Island is transforming the terrain that surrounds it. Live action is interspersed with pre-recorded footage of expeditions around the world, and this edition features a helicopter ride around the Eyjafjallajoekull volcano. Plus, comedian Ed Byrne heads to Bristol University to learn about different eruptions.
[edit] Destruction and Rebirth
Kate Humble and Iain Stewart visit the site of the 1969 Mauna Ulu eruption in Hawaii, which covered 17 square miles of rainforest in lava. Environmental scientist Hugh Tuffen talks about his expedition to watch the Puyehue volcano in Chile erupt, and the programme also features a report on how the residents of an Icelandic island managed to save their harbour during a 1973 eruption.
[edit] Movement of the Earth
Kate Humble and Iain Stewart visit Kalapana, a Hawaiian town destroyed 20 years ago by lava flows from the island's volcanic menace Kilauea. They also explore the connections between volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis, and Iain visits the Bay of Naples to explain the forces responsible for the most devastating eruptions. Plus, Kate descends 150m into the mouth of a dormant volcano in Iceland
[edit] The Future
The week of live events comes to a conclusion as Iain Stewart and Kate Humble examine the future of volcanic forecasting from the summit crater of Hawaii's Kilauea volcano. Ed Byrne also carries out an experiment using a bin, plastic balls and liquid nitrogen to mimic a supervolcanic eruption, and Kate finds a volcano in Iceland that could dwarf the trouble caused by Eyjafjallajokull during the spring of 2010.
