A Scottish general encounters three witches who tell him he is destined to be king. Inspired by their prophecies and the urging of his ambitious wife, he decides to murder the reigning monarch and seize the throne himself. However, once crowned, he succumbs to paranoia and finds himself forced to kill again to maintain his hold on power.
